by Dorothy Dunnett ‧ RELEASE DATE: An page reconstruction of the life-and-times of the historical Macbeth, not Shakespeare's—and, though Dunnett's scholarly epic is rich in detail, irony, and elegant prose, most readers will find themselves yearning for the dramatic shaping and darkly vibrant characterization (not to mention the awesome concision!) of the bltadwin.ru: Kirkus Reviews.  · King Hereafter is somewhat unusual among Dunnett’s novels – for one thing, it is not part of a series but a stand-alone, for another, it is her only novel that has an actual historic figure as its main character. Or possibly two, for the novel has also something like a thesis, namely that Thorfinn, Earl of Orkney was identical with MacBeth, King of Alba (best known from Shakespeare’s play, of course)/5(2K). Q After reading and re-reading King Hereafter I wondered if Dorothy Dunnett had been influenced by Sigrid Undset's Kristin Lavransdatter. Kristin appears to take place about two generations after King Hereafter. It is almost like the gap between Nicholas and Lymond.

It is the eleventh century, and Europe is full of young kings - some dreaming of new civilisation, some content to live as their forefathers have done, and all ceaselessly fighting, befriending or betraying one other. InKing Hereafter, Dorothy Dunnett's stage is the wild, half-pagan country of eleventh-century Scotland. Her hero is an ungainly young earl with a lowering brow and a taste for intrigue. He calls himself Thorfinn but his Christian name is Macbeth. Dunnett depicts Macbeth's transformation from an angry boy who refuses to accept his meager share.

They don't even cover the glancing references in HUNT – I just checked. I agree on the dynamism; I've noticed it is there in many first works, and missing in later ones, not just Dunnett's work. My favorite character is KH is Thorkel, I think. King Hereafter is a fictional account of the life of Thorfinn II (), Earl of Caithness and Orkney and then — in Dunnett's reconstruction — King of Alba (Scotland) and the figure on whom Shakespeare's Macbeth was based. Dunnett is best known for her Renaissance novels, but here she turns to the cold, stormy, only barely Christian northwest of Europe during the first half of the eleventh century.
